A Notice of Alteration of the rating list, served by the Valuation Officer, advises you of a change he has made to the current rating list, either increasing , decreasing, deleting the rateable value of your premises or bringing them into rating if they are new. A notice will also be served where there is merely a change in the address or description. It is important, nevertheless, in these circumstances to let your advisor know of the amendment.
The notice will also include an effective date from which the new value or description will apply. This can be earlier than the date the notice was sent to you.
An appeal can be made against the new rateable value and/or the effective date at any time, but there are certain rules about the timing of the appeal which may affect the date it will be effective from.
It is wise, therefore to deal with the issue immediately in order to avoid these potential difficulties.
In certain circumstances you may also have the option of applying for a certificate to amend the rating list at 31 March 2005 and 1 April 2005.
We will be happy to discuss these issues with you; to commence the appeal procedure on your behalf or generally advise on the processes and potential pitfalls. Call Edward Wright, Paul Taylor or Andy Hart to discuss the matter and circumstances of your particular case.
