JULY 2002

The Disability Discrimination (Providers of Services)
(Adjustment of Premises) Regulations 2001

Come into force 1st October 2004

Most of the initial effects of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 have by now been felt throughout the property world. These new Regulations prescribe circumstances in which it is reasonable for service providers to take steps to make alterations.

In particular, they deal with consent in relation to leasehold premises.

By 1st October 2004, you should have completed alterations to your premises. If left until the last few months, it is likely that delays will occur - and that prices will increase!

Generally, compliance with the design standards in the Approved Document to Part M of the Building Regulations will be required in existing buildings - but there are exceptions that may apply to your premises!

All building owners, developers, landlords, service providers and employers should also already be considering having an access audit carried out on their buildings.

Disabilities which will have to be considered include:

mobility problems and other physical impairment, sensory impairment including limited sight, and hearing problems
