Most recent amendments to the legislation affecting working with asbestos came into effect on 1st February 1999. The remaining changes will be effective from August 1999.
The "Action Level" and "Control Limit" for Chrysotile (white) asbestos are reduced.
From 1st August, anyone carrying out airborne asbestos fibre measurements must now be UKAS accredited for both collection and analysis of samples.
The new requirements include advice to employers that they should seek to avoid work with asbestos altogether unless there is no reasonably practicable alternative.
When asbestos is hidden and not discovered until the work is in progress, all work should stop, except for work to make the situation safe, and not restart until a plan of work has been drawn up in accordance with the Regulations.
Guidance on asbestos cement is separate from that relating to asbestos insulating board.
